Gardening during COVID-19

Hello gardeners!
We  hope you are well and staying safe. STEPS staff has been working from our homes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic threat for over a month and will continue to do so through the extended PAUSE until at least May 15. We can be reached by email or calling 607.403.0069.  Amid the pandemic, you may be unsure if it's safe to participate in Ovid Community Garden. It is, with the utmost precaution, common sense, and adherence to the guidelines set forth by the Department of Health while visiting or working in the garden, in order to protect yourself and others see;  https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/new-york-state-pause
The garden offers a really unique opportunity to stay physically active, put hands in the earth and connect with nature, and most importantly increases the production and consumption of nutritious, fresh and locally grown produce ! At this time it is really important that you commit to following precautions and if you prefer to bow out this season, it's okay just let us know. We can refund you or carry over your plot rent to 2021.
Beyond all the benefits of gardening we know many of you truly rely on food that you grow and that is even stronger now with the current uncertainty of jobs and food availability the garden is considered an essential place .The mental health benefit from time I've spent outdoors lately has been really great and I know many of you are feeling cooped-up and desperate for that time outdoors as well. With compliance to the guidance health officials have in place, and our research on best practice for management of community gardens during COVID -19, following these protocols ,using common sense and exercising caution will keep OCG accessible. Per executive order you must wear a mask or face covering in situations where social distancing cannot be maintained, in addition please;
  • Do not visit the garden if you feel ill
  • Limit the size of gardeners to 5 people or fewer
  • Follow social distancing guidelines of remaining at least 6 feet apart at all times
  • Bring your own tools
  • Stay out of the village barn
  • Wash or sanitize your hands frequently, don't touch your face
  • Regular cleaning and sanitation of contact surfaces such as the gate, sanitize after each "touch"
The Environmental Protection Agency website offers a list of EPA- registered disinfectant products for COVID-19. Always consult product label guidelines to determine if disinfectants are safe and recommended for use in the garden.
You will be clearly and quickly informed of any policy changes (developments are fluid).  In addition to existing OCG rules and the guidance set forth in this email, please respond to confirm that all policies and procedures are understood.  I will reach out directly to those that do not have email to request the same. With gratitude for all you do to make the community a better place. Am wishing you a wonderful earth and arbor day and a 2020 gardening season!  Be well and safe.
